Up-to-date TV

Get to grips with the possibilities up-to-date TV technology has to offer.

Up-to-date TV technology gives access to new content. HD channels: Sharper image, brighter colours and a wider selection of channels. Pay-TV channels: Wider selection of channels. HbbTV: Wider selection of channels and interactive services, such as the opportunity to vote during live broadcasts. Smart TV: Free-of-charge streaming services, incl. Yle Areena, mtv and Ruutu, and paid services, such as C More, Ruutu+ and Netflix and other applications, incl. Youtube and Amazon. SD: wild selection of TV channels

Standard-definition (SD) channels: If you are currently receiving these channels, the TV or set-top box you now have suffices as a receiver. No internet connection is required.

High-definition (HD) channels are received via the terrestrial, cable or satellite TV networks. IPTV may also be used, but it requires an internet connection and a contract with an operator. If you watch TV over the terrestrial network, your TV or set-top box must have a DVB-T2 tuner that is Antenna Ready HD tested. If you watch TV over the cable network, your TV or set-top box must be Cable Ready HD tested. No internet connection is required. HD channels come with a sharper image and colours that are more vibrant.

Pay-TV channels are received via the terrestrial, cable or satellite TV networks. IPTV may also be used, but it requires an internet connection and a contract with an operator. To receive pay-TV broadcasts via the terrestrial network, you need an Antenna Ready HD tested TV or set-top box and a CI+ card reader with a linked TV card. To receive pay-TV broadcasts via the cable network, you need a Cable Ready HD tested TV or set-top box and a CI+ card reader with a linked TV card. No internet connection is required. Pay-TV channels offer a wider selection of content.

Hybrid TV services are received via the terrestrial or cable networks. The services are currently available via Digita's terrestrial TV network, Telia's cable TV network, Elisa's cable TV network on Yle and MTV channels, and DNA's cable TV network on MTV channels. Most new televisions come with Hybrid TV services, also known as HbbTV. An internet connection is required. In addition to a wider selection of channels and services, Hybrid TV offers interactivity, such as the opportunity to vote during live broadcasts.

Smart TV and streaming services are received via the internet. Your TV must have so-called Smart TV capability, which most new televisions now do. Smart TVs give access to broadcasters’ own streaming services that are free of charge, including YLE Areena, mtv and Ruutu. Smart TVs also offer paid services such as C More, Ruutu+ and Netflix as well as other applications, including YouTube and Amazon.
